Communication Arts and Sciences professor Brian Fuller and a handful of his students recently received two 2011 Telly Awards for the documentary they produced titled "A Shared Space: Learning from the Mustard Seed School."

The half-hour documentary was shot over a three-week period in January 2010, in Hoboken, New Jersey. The finished product shows urban Christian education that runs counter to existing stereotypes.

Kyle Berkompas '10, Kristin Crawford '11, Chad Drenthe '11, Rachel Kuyvenhoven '11, Eric Nondahl '10 and senior Taylor Wogoman were all involved with the project.

"I can make movies, but I'd rather make moviemakers," said Fuller, "and projects like 'A Shared Space' mean I don't have to choose."

The Telly Awards honor the very best local, regional and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web. The documentary received Bronze Telly Awards in both the Charitable/Not-for-profit films and Cinematography/Videography category.

The project was funded by the Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning and the Battaglia Family with support from the Calvin College Alumni Association.

Note: 'A Shared Space' was one of only five-percent of the 1,000 films submitted to the Hoboken film festival (June, 2011) that were named official selections.
