Hyaeweol Choi, professor of Korean Studies at Australian National University, will give the annual Korean lectureship at Calvin on Tuesday, April 12.
Choi will lecture on the topic of Christian modernity in the history of women in Korea. The lecture will trace the genealogy of modern womanhood in the encounters between Koreans and American Protestant missionaries in colonial Korea (1910-1945). It will show that what it meant to be a "modern" Korean woman was deeply bound up in such diverse themes as Korean nationalism, Confucian gender practices, images of the West and Christianity, and growing desires for selfhood.
The Korean lectureship, sponsored by the Huber's Asian Studies Program, will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the Meeter Center Lecture Hall. Started in 2009, the annual lectureship brings Korea-focused speakers and performers in the arts to campus.
