Calvin College is among the nation's leaders in Goldwater Scholars over the past three years. This year, four Calvin students were chosen as either Goldwater Scholars or for honorable mention status. (U.S. colleges and universities can nominate up to four of their students per year.)

Calvin is in elite company as one of only two schools nationwide to receive recognition for all four nominated students in 2009, 2010 and 2011. (The University of Minnesota-Twin Cities is the only other school to accomplish that feat.)

This year, a total of 275 scholarships were awarded from a nationwide pool of 1,095 mathematics, science and engineering nominees. Calvin juniors Nathan Romero (chemistry), Lauren Manck (chemistry) and Brandon Burkhart (biochemistry) all received scholarships. And sophomore Ryan Martinie (biology) received honorable mention status.

The Goldwater Scholarship Program, which honors Senator Barry M. Goldwater, was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premiere undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

All four 2011 honorees are actively doing research with faculty in the chemistry and biochemistry department at Calvin. Their research interests include: inorganic chemistry, computational chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry. All four students have either published or are in the process of publishing papers related to their research.

Last year, one Calvin student won the scholarship and three received honorable mention. Two years ago, all four of Calvin's nominees received the award.

Each of the Goldwater Scholars will receive $7,500 to be used toward tuition, room and board, books and supplies.
