Nikki Toyama-Szeto's January Series lecture is one of a handful of events being held at Calvin College to honor the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. She will lecture from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 2011, in the Covenant Fine Arts Center auditorium.
Toyama-Szeto serves as the program director for Urbana, a student missions conference that gathers 20,000 students from 120 different countries. She also serves as the chairperson for Mission Year's multi-ethnicity committee.
Her lecture "Beyond Multi-Culturalism to True Community" relates her journey as an Asian-American woman through a racialized and genderized society to the discovery of her own unique contributions in a multi-racial world.
The multicultural development office at Calvin has additional events planned for the day. Events include-a commemorative march, special chapel service and a session that reflects on Toyama-Szeto's lecture, facilitated by Jeff Bouman, director of Calvin's service-learning center.
