Covenant Fine Arts Center - MEDIA DAY (Sneak Peek)

Summary: From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 15, 2010, Calvin will provide members of the media with an opportunity to get a sneak peek at Calvin's completely remodeled Covenant Fine Arts Center (CFAC). A representative from the English, art and music departments will also be available for interviews.

Calvin is less than two weeks away from the opening of its completely remodeled Covenant Fine Arts Center (CFAC). The public dedication of the CFAC will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 - the public's first opportunity to see the re-envisioned space.

Prior to the public dedication, on Friday, October 15, 2010, members of the media will have an opportunity to tour the remodeled facility, which adds more than 40,000 square feet of space to the existing 72,000 square feet (not including the basement, which is about 14,000 square feet and remains unchanged).

A new recital hall, which seats 240 people, and three new art gallery spaces, which nearly doubles the existing gallery space, are two of the key additions to the building.

In addition, the building has been remodeled to create additional practice, rehearsal, teaching and performance space for the 500-some students who play in Calvin's band, orchestra and string quartets, and sing in choral ensembles.

And the spectator experience will also be much improved. Since 1966, the Fine Arts Center has been considered the "front door" to the college, hosting an estimated 18,000 events, many of which were open to the public. Spectators will be treated to upgraded seats, improved lighting and acoustics, as well as wider hallways and more open lobbies, which will allow for better traffic flow. Plus, the re-envisioned space allows for a significant increase in natural light entering the building.
