Summary: Two Calvin College students have recently received prestigious honors: one was named a Goldwater Scholar, the other received a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates at Harvard University.

Cheri Ackerman, a junior biochemistry and Spanish double major, is the recipient of a 2010-2011 Barry S. Goldwater Scholarship. Ackerman will receive a scholarship of up to $7,500 to be used toward tuition, room and board, books and supplies.

In addition, Calvin's three other nominees received honorable mention status. The three include: Jake Baker, a biology and Spanish double major; Lauren Manck, a chemistry and biochemistry double major and Ethan VanAndel, a math and computer science double major.

The Goldwater scholarships are named after Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman. The scholarships are given to students who are pursuing careers in the traditional sciences, mathematics and engineering.

Schipper, who is currently studying in Thailand, will be doing research for ten weeks at Harvard Forest, an ecological research area of 3,000 acres owned and managed by Harvard University.
