Calvin puts on 25th edition of the Jellema Lectures

Summary: Jean Bethke Elshtain, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller professor of social and political ethics at the University of Chicago Divinity School will deliver the 2010 Jellema Lectures on Thursday and Friday, April 29-30, 2010, in Calvin's Prince Conference Center.

Jean Bethke Elshtain's lecture, titled "The Christian Critic and the Culture," will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 29, 2010, in the Oak Room of the Prince Conference Center.

Her second lecture, titled "Do we Really Believe in the Freedom of the Church? Regnum, Sacerdotium, and Democratic Society," will be delivered at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, April 30, 2010, in the Willow Room of the Prince Conference Center.

Elshtain is considered one of America's foremost public intellectuals. Some of her career accomplishments include being the first woman in the history of Vanderbilt University to hold an endowed professorship. She is also the recipient of nine honorary degrees and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Elshtain has written a host of books, including her most recent "Just War Against Terror: The Burden of American Power in a Violent World."

The Jellema lecture series began in 1985 and was named after the founder of Calvin's philosophy department, William Harry Jellema. He taught at Calvin in two different stints, from 1920-1936 and from 1948-1963. Three of Jellema's former students have been elected president of the American Philosophical Association.
