Summary: Calvin College will host its 20th-annual 5K Spring Classic on Saturday, April 24, 2010. This year, Gift of Life of Michigan is partnering with the race to encourage participants to sign up as organ donors.
Organizers of Calvin's 5K Spring Classic are partnering with Gift of Life of Michigan in support of one of the race's long-time sponsors, Founders Bank & Trust. The bank's president and CEO Laurie Beard had a son who was an organ donor. Her son, Paul, died in a car accident in 2005.
According to Gift of Life of Michigan, only 32 percent of Kent County residents are currently organ and tissue donors, and the latest Donate Life America survey ranks Michigan 44th in the percentage of adults on the state's donor registry.
Spring Classic organizers are hoping that they can do their part in moving Michigan closer to the national average. As an added incentive, at this year's race organizers will be giving away a 32GB iPad. Any participant who signs up to be an organ donor on race day or who shows a red heart donor sticker on their driver's license will be eligible for the drawing.
The 5K Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. near the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex, on the road between the Engineering Building and North Hall. To register online, visit www.calvin.edu/classic. Thanks to generous corporate donors, all entry fees go toward student scholarships.
Following the race, the Karen Muyskens Fun Run-a 1K race dedicated to the memory of Calvin chemistry professor Karen Muyskens who passed away in January of 2008-will take place in the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
