Note: The press release below listed the wrong date for the panel. The event will take place on Thursday, March 4, 2010 NOT February 4, 2010, as previously stated. My apologies for any confusion.

Summary: A handful of local Calvin alum attorneys will meet with current Calvin pre-law students to answer a number of their questions about becoming a lawyer in today's marketplace.
Calvin pre-law students will have an opportunity to see where their Calvin education may take them in the next few years. At 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 4, 2010, in the Commons Lecture Hall, a handful of local Calvin alum attorneys will be part of a panel discussion with current pre-law students. They'll share how they became successful in the law profession and how current students can have similar success-even in a tough marketplace.
Jeff Van Winkle '82, who serves as chair of the alumni pre-law advisory council and is a member of the law firm Clark Hill, will moderate the panel.
Panelists include Jeff Gray '00 with Varnum Riddering, Chris Haven '98 with Universal Forest Products, Pam Hoekwater '98 with Legal Aid of West Michigan, and Chris Meyer '90 with Warner Norcross & Judd.
The Calvin alumni association has been working with Calvin pre-law advisor Joel Westra on connecting alumni attorneys and pre-law students in a variety of ways, said Mike Van Denend, the college's director of alumni, parent and community relations.
This panel is one such initiative.
"We are grateful that Calvin alumni want to come back to campus and share their professional experiences with students," said Van Denend.
He also noted that Calvin just completed its first year of a pre-law mentorship program, pairing a practicing attorney with a pre-law student. Chris Meyer, one of Thursday's panelists, was one of the law professionals to serve as a mentor this past year.
