On Friday, December 4, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in North Hall 160, four students
will present their innovative ideas with the hopes of being the inaugural
winner of Calvin's "Big Idea Contest."
This fall the Enterprise Center at Calvin (ECC) introduced the college-wide
competition to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among students.
For the inaugural "Big Idea Contest" each student was required to turn in an
application by November 20, 2009, with a realistic idea that would have benefit
to the community. Four students, whose ideas were deemed to have the greatest
potential to improve lives and succeed in the marketplace were chosen as
finalists.
Now, those four students have five minutes each to convince a panel of judges
that their idea has the best market potential, is the most feasible and will
have a greater social impact than any of the other finalists. The judges then
have five minutes to ask any questions of the finalists.
"God didn’t create us to get lost in the woodwork," said Calvin business
professor Bob Medema. "He created us to change the world. And that takes energy
and enthusiasm, and we're trying to kindle those sort of thoughts or
attributes."
In addition to the "Big Idea Contest", Calvin's annual BizPlan Competition in
the spring is another opportunity for Calvin students to develop their
creativity with a business mindset.
