Summary: The Calvin community will gather at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September
22, 2009, to celebrate the opening of the recently renovated Hoogenboom Health
and Recreation Center.

The Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center - the final piece of the Spoelhof
Fieldhouse Complex - will host a celebration ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
September 22, 2009. The Calvin community will have an opportunity to tour the
only component of the SFC project that wasn't built from scratch.

"It takes on a different personality than the old fieldhouse did. It really
represents for us the academic center of the whole HPERDS department," said
Glen Van Andel, retired chair of the health, physical education, recreation,
dance and sport (HPERDS) department.

The Hoogenboom Center contains classrooms, a human performance lab, the office
of health services and two dance studios, one remodeled and one new. Among the
many new features to the building, a piece of vintage Calvin remains. The hard
maple floor that hosted thousands of basketball and volleyball games and
countless intramural contests remains intact, retaining its honey-colored
finish.

"There’s a little hint of what it used to be, and everybody likes that,"
said dance professor Ellen Van't Hof.

The Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center opened for use back in May of this
year. For more information, contact Kat Vinson at 616-526-8739.
