Summary: A 15-year partnership between Calvin College and Oakdale Park Christian Reformed Church continues this week as students leave campus for the summer and also leave behind items to donate to the church.
Calvin College students are literally lightening their loads as they head home this summer, while helping out a great cause. On Thursday, May 21 beginning at 11 a.m. volunteers from Oakdale Park Christian Reformed Church (CRC) will empty out residence halls and fill up trucks, taking away items that students have decided not to haul back home for the summer.
"Calvin students use the move-out process to purge themselves of lots of things they don't want or need," said John Witte, the college's dean of residence life.
And for the past 15 years those items - everything from clothing to furniture, books and lamps - have formed the foundation for Oakdale's annual rummage sale, being held Thursday through Saturday, June 11-13. The money raised through the sale is plugged back into the community through the church's programs. Organizers say it is a win-win.
"We're reducing our waste and encouraging recycling, while Oakdale Park is sharing these resources with their community in their annual sale," said Witte.
