Summary: Hundreds of young writers are coming to Calvin College to hone their writing skills.

Hundreds of high school and elementary school students will flock to Calvin's campus April 29-30 for the 2009 Youth Writing Festival. The festival, which has been around since 1976, celebrates the writing skills of students from west Michigan.

There are three components to the Youth Writing Festival: Young Authors, High School Writers Workshop and the Middle School Writers Workshop, (which took place in November).

This year, 1,100 students representing 48 elementary schools in west Michigan will attend the Young Authors on Thursday, April 30. Each student comes to Calvin with a piece of his or her writing. The students will break into small groups and read their writings aloud. They will also be given feedback from Calvin students.

The High School Writers Workshop is on Wednesday, April 29 and includes 220 students representing 20 area schools. The students attend small hands-on workshops and hear nationally recognized writers read their work, share their stories and talk about their lives as writers. In addition, the students' prior work is evaluated by a group of local writers, and awards are given out in a number of different categories.
