The Calvin Theatre Company (CTC) continues their celebration of 75 years of Theatre with their final play of the season, The Syringa Tree. The play opens Thursday, April 23 in the Gezon Auditorium at Calvin College.
The play is a powerful, deeply moving story of the enduring love beginning in the early 1960s between two South African families - one white, one black. Two young women growing up in the same South African household experience numerous acts of aggression, sacrifice and love. The story spans four generations and is told through the perspective of Elizabeth Grace, first as a child and then as an adult.
Calvin freshman Andrew Szobody plays two roles in the play. Having grown up a missionary child in Africa, Szobody appreciates the authenticity of the entire production: "This play really does have a part of Africa woven into it. It's legit: it's real. Somebody didn't just try to make it feel quasi-African. This was someone who wrote the play and knew Africa and wove that into it."
Performance dates for the Syringa Tree are April 23-25 and April 30-May 2 at 8 p.m. in the Gezon Auditorium. Tickets are on sale at the Campus Box Office, 526-6282. The play is open to the public, but not suitable for young children.
