Calvin Alumna's 1,000 mile walk on the beach
Calvin alumna Loreen Niewenhuis '85 will be walking along the beaches as she
passes through west Michigan this week (April 7-8). It is just one leg of a
1,000 mile journey walking counter-clockwise around Lake Michigan.
"I want to take in the complete lake. I want to know the lake ... measure it
step-by-step," she said.
The journey began on Navy Pier in Chicago. Her trek will take her about six
months. The end goal: to write a book – a narrative about Lake Michigan. She
will title her book "A 1,000 Mile Walk on the Beach."
Niewenhuis has a bachelor of science degree from Calvin College and a master
of science from Wayne State University. She says she has an interest in using
her scientific background along her trek. She will be studying invasive
species, water usage issues and much more.
