Calvin celebrates Cesar Chavez's birthday!

Calvin College will celebrate Cesar Chavez's birthday with a few events on campus March 31 and April 1.

Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) was a Mexican American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist who used non-violent methods to fight for the rights of the migrant farm workers in the southwestern United States. Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers, which protected the rights of farm workers and continually brought a voice to farm laborers of the United States.

Calvin College will celebrate his birthday with events that deal with immigration. A schedule of events is listed below:

March 31, 2009

Birthday Cake: Hekman Library Lobby, 10:30-3:00 p.m.

"Inside Immigration: The Struggle to Become a Citizen" Hiemenga Hall (Room 332), 3:30 p.m.
Blair Babcock an ICE(Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Agent will explain
the ways in which willing immigrants can come into the Unites States legally

"A Day without a Mexican" Bytwerk Theatre, 7:30 p.m.
A mockumentary about what life would be like in the states without Mexicans

April 1, 2009

"The Impact of Immigration: A Multifaceted Perspective" - Commons Lecture Hall, 5 p.m.
A panel discussion looking at immigration and its effects on the United States.
