Calvin College's prestigious Entrada Scholars Program will begin on June 15 when 64 high school students of color from Grand Rapids, and across the continent, move into their residence hall and take part in opening ceremonies and orientation.
Move-in begins that day at noon and goes until 4:30 p.m. at which time all of the students will head to Gezon Auditorium on Calvin's campus for the opening events.
This year's 64 high school students will reside at Calvin from June 15 to July 11.
During that time they will experience a college immersion program whose core is academic excellence, said Tasha Paul, associate director of pre-college programs at Calvin. In fact so rigorous is the Entrada selection process that this year's 64 scholars were selected from an applicant pool of 149.
Entrada students take a regular Calvin summer school course. When not attending class and studying, the Entrada scholars do the things normal college students do: eat in the dining hall, study in the library, work in the computer labs and shoot hoops in the gym. And when the homework is completed, they sing karaoke, play Frisbee golf, perform on variety night, learn to salsa dance and enjoy an occasional outing to the beach or an amusement park.
