Calvin Teams Excel at Math Competition

Summary: A trio of Calvin teams excelled at a recent statewide mathematics competition, including a first-place finish for one squad.

For the 15th time in 32 years a team of Calvin College students has emerged victorious at the annual Lower Michigan Mathematics Competition.

The competition was held April 5, 2008 and the results were just recently released.

This year's contest was won by the Calvin team of Tim Ferdinands, Ethan Van Andel and Jess Vriesema with a score of 65 percent. Interestingly all three students are local and all three matriculated at Grand Rapids Christian High School, long known for its outstanding mathematics curriculum.

Finishing second for 2008 was a team from the University of Michigan at Flint with a score of 51 percent, while in third was a squad from Hope College at 48 percent. A second Calvin team -- Greg Clark, Jim Hays and Sarah Snoeyink -- finished fourth at 45 percent.

A total of 31 teams from a dozen lower Michigan colleges and universities participated in the three-hour competition with the average team score being 25.8 percent and the median being 26 percent. Among the schools represented in the 2008 event were: Albion, Alma, Aquinas, Calvin, Grand Valley, Hillsdale, Hope, Kalamazoo, Lawrence Tech, Olivet, Saginaw Valley and UM-Flint.
