June 21, 2007 == MEDIA ADVISORY

At an upcoming Calvin Around Town event a varied group of people involved in recent services for former President Gerald R. Ford will give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into what it took to pull the services off.

"Welcoming a President Home" will take place on Tuesday, June 26 at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum from 6 to 8:30 pm. The cost is $15 per person and is open to all (limited to the first 250).

Says Calvin alumni director Mike VanDenend: "The emotional homecoming of President Ford this January characterized the relationship between a dedicated public servant and a grateful community. But there are many stories behind the scenes of this 'saying farewell' event. We are looking forward to hearing those stories next week."

The event begins at 6 pm with a reception and viewing of the Museum's exhibits highlighting the lives of President and Mrs. Ford. At 7 pm Willett and Gerald R. Ford Foundation chairman emeritus Martin Allen, Jr. will speak before giving way to coordinator of presidential events Chip Emery and panelists Dick Harms (Calvin Archivist), Robert Bolt (Calvin professor emeritus), Mark Herald (East Grand Rapids Director of Public Safety), Robert VanderLaan (former State Senator and Majority Leader) and Gerald Steele (former Calvin Director of Campus Safety).
