December 20, 2006 == MEDIA ADVISORY
The Grand Rapids Humanities Council and Calvin College are collaborating on a
new program called "Generations Share Reading," which encourages family
literacy by allowing children and their families and friends to preserve a
significant moment in their lives, the sharing of a favorite story.
Each participant in "Generations Share Reading" will select their favorite
children's book and read it aloud to a child in Calvin's state-of-the-art DeVos
Communication Center. Each reading will be videotaped and participants will be
given a DVD of the session as a keepsake.
Participants must sign up in advance for an appointment, and space is limited
(Humanities Council members will be allowed to register first, beginning on
January 8; registration will open to the general public on January 10). There
is no charge to participate or for the keepsake DVD. Appointments will be
scheduled for Saturday, January 20; Thursday, January 25; Friday, January 26;
or Saturday, January 27, 2007.
The program is made possible in part through the support of the Michigan
Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities,
and through the support of Calvin College.
Participants can call 774-1776 to register.
Media interested in this story can call Cheryl Van Til of the Humanities
Council of Grand Rapids at 774-1776 or grhuman@gvsu.edu
