April 19, 2006 == MEDIA ADVISORY
The Festival of Faith & Writing kicks off at Calvin College tomorrow (April
20) at noon with a talk in the Calvin Fieldhouse by acclaimed poet Luci Shaw.
That event is free and open to all, one of several sessions (some free, some
with a fee) open to the general public.
For the complete list of public events see:

The 2006 version of Festival will draw almost 2,000 registrants from around
the globe to Grand Rapids for three days of conversations about the
intersections of faith and writing. There will be numerous seminars,
workshops, open readings and more.
There also will be a quartet of keynote lectures: Alice McDermott, Salman
Rushdie, Marilynne Robinson and Walter Wangerin Jr. In addition Don Miller,
author of Blue Like Jazz, will present a bonus talk on Saturday night.
McDermott's talk, to be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:30 pm in the Calvin
Fieldhouse, will kick off with a major surprise: one Festival registrant will
receive a book deal from Paraclete Press, a Boston-based publisher, as a result
of a contest sponsored by Paraclete.
McDermott judged this year's contest and the winner, who will be announced
just prior to the start of her talk, will be given $2,000 (advance royalties)
and guaranteed publication of his or her book by Paraclete Press.
Following Shaw's talk the Festival begins in earnest with a multitude of
events big and small. For the complete details on the 2006 Festival of Faith &
Writing see www.calvin.edu/festival
NOTE TO MEDIA: Rushdie's talk has significant requirements for media that
have been set by him and his agent. First, he will allow no television cameras
at his talk. In addition still photography is restricted to the first five
minutes of his address. We apologize for these restrictions and pledge to do
our best to assist you with your coverage as we are able.
