Calvin College has a 2005-2006 enrollment of 4,189 students, an increase of
three students from a year ago when the total enrollment numbered 4,186
students.
Calvin's first-year class for 2005-2006 numbers 1,007 students, a jump of 105
students from last year.
Calvin vice president for enrollment and external relations Tom McWhertor says
the increase is encouraging, but that the college hopes to do even more this
year to bring in an even stronger first-year class for 2006-2007.
"We feel we offer a terrific education at Calvin from a firm Christian
foundation," he says. "Our challenge now is to communicate that excellence, and
our affordability, to high school students and their parents."
McWhertor says that Calvin's increasingly national academic reputation appears
to be resonating with prospective students.
He notes that 627 or 62.3% of this year's first-year students are top
scholarship recipients. That compares to 534 students or 59.2% last year.
Calvin's chief number-cruncher Tom VanEck says that this year's student body
includes:
*2,274 women (54.3%) and 1,915 men (45.7%)
*364 international students (8.7%), including 176 Canadian students (4.2%),
down nine from the year before, and 188 students (4.5%) from other countries,
down 25 from the year before
*227 (5.4%) students of color, up four from a year ago and up 26 from two
years ago
*2,253 students from Michigan (53.8%)
*1,548 (38.6%) students who have at least one parent who is a Calvin alum, up
49 from a year prior
