Denise Isom, a professor of education at Calvin College, has been honored by
the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) with an MCC Faculty/Staff Community
Service-Learning Award, the highest award given by the MCC to faculty and staff
in the state of Michigan.
Isom received her Ph.D. from Loyola University in Chicago in the field of
Anthropology of Education. Her research interests include the impact of race
and gender on schooling.
Isom was nominated by Calvin's Jeff Bouman and Gail Heffner, both of whom have
seen firsthand her efforts to bring Calvin students into educational settings
outside the classroom.
Says Bouman: "Despite the potential pitfalls, Denise sends students out into
local schools and other learning environments equipped with lenses to see
difficult issues for what they are, with no easy fixes. I would describe her
approach to teaching as very engaged and deeply passionate about real, and very
difficult societal issues as they relate to education, particularly in urban
America."
Michigan Campus Compact is a state-level non-profit organization that promotes
the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically
engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and
campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic
engagement.
