September 13, 2004 == MEDIA ADVISORY
The Calvin Film Forum has announced its fall 2004 events.
Among the offerings: Gimme Shelter, the acclaimed 1970 documentary about a
Rolling Stones concert in Altamont, California, which descended into chaos and
a screening of Three Colors: Blue in conjunction with the publication of Calvin
English professor Roy Anker's forthcoming book called Catching Light: Finding
God in the Movies.
Calvin communication professor Carl Plantinga says the Calvin Film Forum is an
interdisciplinary group of faculty at Calvin "dedicated to the promotion of
film art and culture on Calvin's campus for the benefit of Calvin and the
broader community."
The group began last year to take advantage of the new Bytwerk Video Theater
at Calvin, housed in the new DeVos Communications Center.
"The (Bytwerk) Theater is an amazing place to see a movie," says Plantinga,
one of the prime movers behind the Film Forum. "It's got custom-made seats from
American Seating, theater-style lighting, complete surround-sound. It's a
perfect venue for this new series."
Each year the Forum plans to host "Films We Love," in which a participant
chooses a film of particular significance to him or her, introduces the film
and leads a post-film discussion. It also will host a film series annually and
bring in visiting filmmakers.
The fall 2004 slate includes all three elements.
The visiting filmmaker will be the first thing on tap for this fall's series.
On October 1 at 3:30 pm Deanna Morse, an award-winning filmmaker and professor
at Grand Valley State University, will present some of her animations and
experimental films.
That will be followed two weeks later by three straight weeks of "rock on
film."
First up will be a Friday, October 15 showing at 7:30 of Gimme Shelter -
introduced by Calvin professor Chris Smit. On Friday, October 22 at 7:30
Calvin art professor Adam Wolpa will introduce a showing of Stop Making Sense,
the 1984 concert documentary about David Byrne and the Talking Heads. And
finally on Friday, October 29 at 7:30 pm, Plantinga will introduce a showing of
This is Spinal Tap, the 1984 "mockumentary" about the fictional heavy metal
band Spinal Tap.
Three Colors: Blue will be shown on Friday, November 5 at 7:30 pm as part of
"Films We Love." It will be introduced by Roy Anker. with a book reception to
follow.
