As one of the top Christian colleges in the country, Calvin has a reputation
as a pretty serious and academic-minded place.
But the school's annual Mud Bowl and Chaos Day traditions are anything but
serious and academic. And this Saturday, September 11, those long-standing
events will again bring a fun start to a new school year.
The 36th annual "Chaos Day" pits all six of Calvin's dorms vs each other in a
variety of contests. Some events include a tug-of-war, three-legged race, hula
hoop pass, human wheelbarrow race and a water balloon toss. Generally each dorm
has a color and all of the participants from that dorm not only wear that color
shirt, but many also paint their faces and their bodies in that color.
This will be the 26th annual Mud Bowl and it pits members of Calvin's
apartments vs each other in games including a wheelbarrow race, piggy-back race
and soccer-ball hop (with the ball between the knees). To be honest, however,
the game is not the thing; the object is to get as dirty as possible. All of
the games take place in thick, knee-deep mud, prepared especially for the
occasion with dirt and plenty of water.
Calvin's John Witte works in residence life and says the point of both events
is simply "to have a fun, shared experience as a community of students living
in the residence halls . . . to meet others from your hall, blow off some steam
after the first week of class, develop a bit of hall unity and pride and laugh
with others."
Chaos Day begins at 10 a.m. on the women's softball diamond on the main campus
(near the Calvin Fieldhouse). The Mud Bowl begins at 1 p.m. behind the Phi-Chi
apartment complex on the Calvin campus on the east side of the East Beltline
(near the two new buildings).
