The Republican National Convention begins on Monday, August 30 in New York. A
number of Calvin College professors would be good sources for media interested
in covering and/or localizing the convention.

Doug Koopman, Ph.D. in political science, professor of political science at
Calvin
-Dr. Koopman's research specialties are Congress and the intersection of
Christianity and politics. His book Hostile Takeover examined the House
Republican Party from 1980 through its rise to majority status in 1995. He
recently wrote Of Little Faith: The Politics of George W. Bush's Faith-Based
Initiatives with Amy Black of Wheaton College and David Ryden of Hope College.
Before beginning his teaching career at Calvin, Koopman worked for 15 years on
Capitol Hill, in a variety of staff positions for individual members of

Corwin Smidt, Ph.D. in political science, director of the Paul B. Henry
Institute for the Study of Christianity and Politics
-Dr. Smidt is an expert on religion and politics, including the political
activism of clergy. In October a new book by Smidt will be published by Baylor
University Press called "Pulpit and Politics: Clergy in American Politics at
the Advent of the Millennium." For that book, Smidt gathered data during the
2000 Presidential election on the relationship between belief and behavior,
theology and politics, religious commitments and social activism from
African-American, Baptist, Jewish, mainline Protestant, Roman Catholic and
other religious groups.

James Penning, Ph.D. in political science, professor of political science at
Calvin
-Dr. Penning is an expert on state and local politics. The week of the
convention he will be in Grand Rapids Monday through Wednesday and then will
travel to Chicago for the annual meeting of the American Political Science
Association where he will be program chair for the Religion and Politics
section of the meeting. Penning has served on a wide variety of boards,
including the Grand Rapids Zoning Board and Planning Commission. He also is
President of the Michigan Conference of Political Scientists.
