April 20, 2004 == MEDIA ADVISORY
Although there has been a dearth of job fairs this year for teachers, Calvin
College plans to go on with the West Michigan Collegiate Career Consortium's
annual event for teacher candidates on Wednesday, April 28 in the Calvin
Fieldhouse from 9 am to 4 pm.
The event is sponsored by Aquinas, Calvin, Cornerstone, Grand Valley and Hope
- five schools that this month and next will graduate over 1,500 prospective
teacher candidates.
Joining those prospects at the Calvin Fieldhouse will be an estimated 50 P-8
and high schools from the West Michigan area (plus an assortment of schools
from outside the area and even outside the state).
The Calvin fair comes in a year that saw (according to a recent Detroit News
story) just one teacher job fair in Metro Detroit this spring and a handful
outstate. That's because the job market for teachers is tight right now. So
tight in Detroit that some teacher job fairs have been canceled.
According to the Detroit News article that's because a stagnant economy and
budget cuts have forced most public schools in Michigan to cut back or
eliminate their hiring plans for now.
Calvin officials say that although it is a stagnant economy for teacher
candidates in Michigan and employer participation is down, the Consortium is
determined to continue this annual event as a service for teacher candidates
and school districts.
The April 28 event at Calvin will include representatives from such schools as
the Pontiac School District, the Taylor School District, Lakeshore Public
Schools in Stevensville, Forest Hills Public Schools in Grand Rapids, Rockford
Public Schools, Grand Rapids Public Schools, Muskegon Public Schools, Grand
Ledge Public Schools, West Ottawa Public Schools, Oakland Schools, Kalamazoo
Public Schools as well as a variety of charter school systems, such as National
Heritage Academies.
Candidates from non-sponsoring schools are welcome to participate in the
afternoon for a $10 registration fee.
