September 19, 2003 == FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Calvin College has a 2003-2004 enrollment of 4,332 students, its third-highest
ever and the highest since 1988. That 4,332 figure marks an increase of two
students from last year.

Calvin's enrollment peak came in the late 1980s when it had 4,359 students in
1987 and 4,505 students in 1988. Since then the school has made a conscious
decision to keep enrollment in the 4,300-student range for a variety of
reasons, including academic quality and on-campus housing availability.

This year's 4,332 number includes 4,096 full-time students (up 22 from last
year) and 236 part-time students (down 20 from last year) for a traditional
undergraduate full-time equivalent of 4,124.

Calvin vice president Tom McWhertor is pleased with the 2003-2004 enrollment
and says it's due to a number of factors, including:

*a good incoming class
*heathy numbers of transfer students
*solid retention rates for last year's first-year, sophomore and junior
classes

Calvin enrollment research director Tom VanEck, the school's chief number
cruncher, notes that this year's student body includes:

*2,424 women (56%) and 1,908 men (44%)
*399 international students (9.2%), including 202 Canadian students (4.7%), up
17 from the year before, and 197 students (4.5%) from other countries, up 15
from the year before
*265 non-white U.S. ethnic minorities (6.1%), up from 5.4% last year
*2,305 students from Michigan (53.2%)
*1,541 (37.1%) students who have at least one parent who is a Calvin alum

The entering first-year class numbers 1,042 students, down seven from a year
ago, but up 11 from two years ago. That first-year class largely mirrors the
overall student body. For example, it is 55% female, 48% Michigan and 7%
non-white U.S. ethnic minorities.
