Calvin College will host a "Community Partnership Celebration" on Tuesday,
April 29 from 5:30 pm to 8 pm at Alternative Directions (1725 South Division).

The free celebration offers Calvin faculty, staff and students and community
partners an opportunity to view displays, enjoy ethnic food and recognize
successful partnerships. A brief program will take place at 6:15 pm, honoring
various award recipients. Media are invited to attend the event.

Calvin sponsors the event to "celebrate the many partnerships between Calvin
College and community organizations, churches and schools, and to envision a
future of even more effective connections in the Grand Rapids community."

Among the highlights of this year's event: the second annual "Agent of
Renewal Award" will be presented to Maureen Geary, OP, a Dominican sister who
works for the Diocese of Grand Rapids. Geary is being honored for her
passionate activity for social justice, including her efforts to educate about
urban sprawl and her work with Call to Renewal's Restorative Justice committee.

Others who will be recognized include: Calvin sophomore Laura Borths, who
organized her dorm to provide weekly support for Camelot Woods after-school
program; Grand Rapids Public Schools employee Martha Zophy, who connects many
Calvin students as well as Calvin staff and alumni to early readers at Ottawa
    Montessori as part of the HOSTS (Helping One Student To Succeed) program;
science professor David DeHeer who works with the Kent County Association for
Gifted and Talented on summer science camps; and art professor Jo-Ann
VanReeuwyk, whose art students teach art lessons at area public schools on
behalf of the Grand Rapids Art Museum and teach a thematic art lesson at GRAM
    on selected Saturday mornings.
