April 24, 2003 == MEDIA ADVISORY
Catherine's Care Center, in conjunction with the Creston Neighborhood
Association and a group of Hope-Calvin Nursing Students, will be sponsoring a
community health fair on Saturday, May 3 from 10 am to 2 pm at Palmer School
(located at 309 Palmer N.E., west off Plainfield and just north of Creston High
School).
The purpose of the fair is to promote health awareness, injury prevention and
safety strategies in the community. This community event will provide health
information and resources. For kids, there will be a fire truck, an ambulance,
a police car, face painting, crafts, booths with health information and fun
activities. For adults, there will be free cholesterol and diabetes screening,
blood pressure checks, health information, and door prizes including gift
certificates to area restaurants. Also, from noon until 3 pm people from
Berean Baptist Church will be distributing free food from the playground behind
the school.
"With summer coming, the health and safety fair is a great way to ensure our
community's health and well being," says Frank Lynn, Community Coordinator of
Catherine's Care Center. The mission of the Center is to improve the health of
Creston and Belknap area residents through motivation, screening, education and
referrals, and by acting as a gateway to primary health care services.
During the semester students in the Hope-Calvin program work in the Creston
neighborhood, fulfilling their senior year "clinical study." Working with
Catherine's Care Center the students do home visits, immunizations, health
screenings in a local senior citizens apartment building and more.
Calvin professor Barb Timmermans says the partnership gives students a good
taste of what it means to be a nurse in a community and to focus on
neighborhood needs.
For more information on the May 3 event, please contact Catherine's Care
Center at 336-8800 or the Creston Neighborhood Association office at 454-7900.
