June Hamersma, director of The January Series at Calvin College, is being
honored for a long tenure of service to Hospice of Michigan with that
organization's 2003 Crystal Rose Award as "Outstanding Individual."
She will receive the award on Saturday, April 12 at Hospice's 18th annual
Crystal Rose Ball, a black tie event held in Detroit (this year in the Atrium
of Ford Field). That event will include a private tailgate party at the Ford
Field visitors' lockerroom, a reception and a program, to be hosted by Mark
Champion, the "voice of the Detroit Lions," and Jim Brandstatter, sports
commentator and former University of Michigan football tackle.
Hamersma was instrumental in the 1980s in the founding of Hospice of Greater
Grand Rapids and served on the board, including a tenure as chair. In the
1990s, she rejoined the organization as Hospice of Greater Grand Rapids merged
with Hospice of Southeastern Michigan and 15 other programs across the state to
form Hospice of Michigan, one of the three largest not-for-profit hospices in
the United States. Hospice of Michigan now provides end-of-life care for 7,000
patients and their families annually across Michigan's lower peninsula.
Over the last decade, Hamersma has been instrumental in launching (and
chairing) the Hospice of Michigan Foundation which annually raises several
million dollars to enable Hospice of Michigan to provide end-of-life care no
matter a patient's ability to pay. Among the prominent friend-raising and
fund-raising events she and the Foundation oversee have been two successful
Mask Projects and the annual "Walk and Remembrance" walk in East Grand Rapids.
