January 21, 2003 == FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Calvin College's Homecoming 2003 festivities, scheduled for February 3-8, will
include a special guest; 1983 graduate Dr. Steven Wiersma, currently the Chief
of the Bureau of Epidemiology for the Florida Department of Health. Wiersma
will speak on Saturday, February 8 at 1:30 pm Calvin on "Notes from a Disease
Detective." That talk is free and open to all and will be held in the Prince
Conference Center at Calvin.
In recent months Wiersma has been widely quoted by national media, having
worked in Florida on the nation's first anthrax cases and then on cases of West
Nile virus. In his talk at Calvin he will address those life-changing incidents
as well as a career that has taken him from Zaire to Germany to the Gulf War to
Zambia to Florida in less than 20 years. He also had a one-year stint during
that stretch as an emergency physician in Grand Rapids for Patient Care
Specialists and did an internship with Butterworth Hospital.
Wiersma's talk will be just one of the highlights of a busy Homecoming at
Calvin.
