October 31, 2002 == FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Calvin and Hope colleges will sponsor a fun event on November 14 at Johnson
Controls for alumni of the two institutions who work for JCI.
The gathering, to be held over the lunch hour (from 11:30 am to 1 pm) at JCI's
People Center, will include tailgate-style food, previews of their teams by
Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek and Hope men's basketball coach
Glenn VanWieren and chances to win not only Calvin and Hope paraphernalia, but
also tickets to the 2003 Calvin-Hope games.
The event, which is being co-sponsored by the Calvin and Hope development
offices, also will include a short explanation of JCI's matching gift program
and its connections to Calvin and Hope.
But Calvin vice president for development Bob Berkhof says the event is not a
fundraiser.
"It's intended to do a couple of things," he says. "We want to thank alumni at
Johnson Controls for their support of our institutions. And we want to remind
them of JCI's generous matching gift program."
Matching gift programs are important for schools like Calvin and Hope. The JCI
program means that for every dollar donated to Calvin or Hope by a JCI employee
another dollar gets donated to the school by JCI.
"For private schools like Calvin and Hope," says Berkhof, "matching gift
programs are critical."
Calvin has about 115 alumni employed at JCI, while Hope has about 60. Among
those employees is Calvin alum Steve Honderd, who will welcome folks to the
November 14 gathering. Honderd was on a national championship team as a junior
in 1992, was named NCAA player of the year as a senior and later was named
player of the decade for the 1990s by DII News.
