May 10, 2002 == FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
About 650 local school kids will come to Calvin College between May 13 and May
21 for science as they've not likely seen it before.
Calvin's Larry Louters and Rich Huisman of the Chemistry Department will direct
13 presentations that annually feature a mix of magic, mayhem and, yes,
merriment as kids discover that science can be fun. That, says Louters, is the
whole idea, noting that after the demos the kids all want to be scientists.
All presentations will be in room 301 of Calvin's Science Building. They begin
Monday, May 13 at 9:30 a.m. with 50 students from Riverside Elementary (a school
that had a first-hand look at science as a result of the May 9 chemical spill in
Grand Rapids). That session will conclude at 10:45 a.m. From 12:30-1:45 p.m.
45 students from Creston Christian will be on campus.
Sessions continue on May 14, May 15, May 16, May 17, May 20 and May 21 in the
morning and afternoon. The biggest group of the week will be in on Tuesday, May
14 from 1:45-3 p.m. when 65 students come from Breton Downs Elementary School to
campus.
