Calvin Student-Athletes Receive Academic All-America Honors; Calvin Finishes 26th in Final 2017-18 Learfield Directors' Cup Standings; Calvin Sports Information Director Receives Robin Hartman Writing Award MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Calvin College senior Ethan Valentine has been named a Google Cloud Academic All-American in the men's track and field/cross country division. Valentine was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America third team this afternoon. Valentine hails from Mason, Ohio. He is a graduate of William Mason High School. At Calvin, Valentine has been a four-year standout on the men's track and field team. Over the course of his collegiate career, Valentine has earned four NCAA III All-America awards and been named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Runner twice. A 400 meter specialist, Valentine has been a four-time national qualifier to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships. As a freshman in 2015, he earned All-American honors in the 400 meters at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing eighth. In 2016, he was an All-American once again in the 400 meters at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing seventh. In 2017, he was a two-time All-American - earning the award at both the NCAA III Indoor and NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 400 meters. At the 2017 Indoor National Meet, he finished seventh in the 400 meters. He then made a bid for a national title in the 400 meters at the 2017 Outdoor National Meet before finishing second. In the 400 meter prelims of the 2017 NCAA III Outdoor Championships, he posted the fastest time in Division III Track and Field that spring with a school-record time of 46.80. A team captain, Valentine has led the Calvin men's track and field team to four MIAA outdoor titles and a pair of MIAA indoor crowns. He was the MIAA 400 meter outdoor and indoor champion in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Runner for indoor track and field in 2017 and for outdoor track and field in 2018. In addition, he has been a three-time All-MIAA selection in both indoor and outdoor track and field. He was named to the Great Lakes All-Region Indoor Track and Field Team in 2016, 2017 and 2018 by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. He also received USTFCCCA Great Lakes All-Region honors outdoors in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. During his junior year, Valentine served as a residence assistant (RA) in the Calvin dormitories. He has also served as a volunteer with the Calvin Student Development Office. Valentine recently graduated from Calvin with a double major in Chinese and biology. He is a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and has been a two-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team. Calvin student-athletes have now received Google Cloud Academic All-America honors 128 times. WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING For the second straight year, Calvin College senior Sarah Bradley has been named a Google Cloud Division III Academic All-American. Bradley has been named to the Google Cloud Division III Academic All-America second team in the women's at-large division. A year ago she was named a third team Academic All-American. The women's at-large division includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, and water polo. A native of Wheaton, Illinois, Bradley is now eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America consideration. A graduate of Wheaton North High School, Bradley recently completed a standout season on the Calvin women's swimming and diving team. A four-time national diving qualifier, Bradley was an honorable mention NCAA III All-American this past March, placing ninth on three-meter board at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. It marked the third NCAA III Honorable Mention All-America berth of her collegiate career. This past March, Bradley was the 2018 Central Region diving champion on the one and three-meter boards. She also claimed the 2018 MIAA title on the one-meter board to earn a spot on the All-MIAA team for the third straight year. In 2017, she was the MIAA champion on the one and three-meter boards and was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Diver. At the 2017 NCAA III Central Diving Regional, she captured a regional title on the one-meter board with a score of 432.35. At Calvin, Bradley has majored in Spanish and engineering. Her engineering concentrations are in civil and environmental engineering. She carried a 3.91 grade point average. CALVIN FINISHES 26th IN FINAL LEARFIELD DIRECTOR'S CUP STANDINGS Calvin College has finished 26th in the final 2017-18 Learfield Director's Cup standings. Calvin has finished 26th in the final 2017-18 NCAA III Learfield Directors' Cup standings with a total of 515.50 points. Calvin has finished in the top 30 of the Learfield Director's Cup standings 23 consecutive years. In addition, Calvin is one of only nine schools to finish in the top 40 of the Division III Director's Cup standings every year since the competition begin with the 1995-96 academic year. "It is great to be recognized on a national stage," said Calvin Director of Athletics Dr. Jim Timmer. "We are blessed at Calvin to have a wonderful athletics program and our entire campus can be proud of this accomplishment." Williams won the 2017-18 title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III with a score of 1,126.25 points. The Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Learfield Sports to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country, and is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events. Division III points are awarded based on finish in championship competition. Each national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth 90 points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for 75 points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish. Calvin picked up 137.5 points during the spring sports season. The Calvin women's lacrosse team reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament, its softball team advanced to the regional final of the NCAAIII Tournament, its women's outdoor track and field team was 41st at the NCAA III Championships and its men's track and field took 77th at the NCAA III Championships. Combined, 10 of Calvin's 21 sports teams scored Directors' Cup points during the 2017-18 academic year. The awards honors the late Albion Sports Information Director Robin Hartman who served his institution with distinction, particularly as a writer. Jeff Febus' feature story on former Calvin women's soccer standout and All-American Tara (Dyk) Wegner competing for Grand Rapids FC during the summer of 2017 was selected as the winning piece for the 2017-18 Robin Hartman Writing Award. Febus is in his 24th year as the Sports Information Director at Calvin College, his alma mater. Along with overseeing the athletic communications staff for Calvin's 20-sport athletic department, Febus was named the Division III Great Lakes Region recipient of the AVCA's Grant Burger Media Award in 2013. Robin Hartman served as Albion's sports information director from 1987 to 2001 and is remembered as a pioneer in small college sports information with the introduction of one of the first athletic websites. Hartman forged the path of using the internet as a source for streaming audio play-by-play. Hartman passed away in 2006. The Hartman Award honors outstanding writing in a sports information capacity, either by a sports information director or assistant.
