VanScoyk Advances in NCAA III Men's Golf Championships in Thrilling Fashion;
Diekema and Ferguson Book Tickets to NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships;
Kelly Pepper Named to IWLCA Great Lakes All-Region Team;
Bradley and Moentmann Named to Google Cloud Academic All-District Team

MEN'S GOLF

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Ben VanScoyk had a thrilling Thursday at the NCAA Division III Championships. The Calvin senior won a four-man playoff to advance in the morning. VanScoyk shot a two-under-par round of 70 on Thursday.

"Ben showed a lot of toughness today," said Calvin head coach Dr. Brian Bolt. "He was mentally tough in the playoff this morning and he was able to advance. He then followed that up with a solid round of golf."
A senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, VanScoyk is currently tied for 15th place at 218 strokes after three days of competition.

The day started with a four-man playoff for the final individual spot in the championships. After playing one playoff hole on Wednesday evening, two more rounds were needed on Thursday to fill the final spot. VanScoyk hit par on the first playoff hole on Thursday morning that bounced Ryan Muthiora of Kenyon. VanScoyk then sank Grady Anderson of North Carolina Wesleyan and Evan Yue of Goucher with a birdie.

The Grand Rapids native opened the third round of play with a birdie on No. 10.

After a bogey on No. 11, VanScoyk shot par for six-straight holes.

VanScoyk sank back-to-back birdies at No. 18 and No. 1 to go two-under-par for the day.

The Calvin senior closed the day with birdies on No. 6 and No. 8 to finish the day at 70 strokes.

The round of 70 is VanScoyk's lowest round since March, when he recorded a round of 69 at the Wynlakes Colliegate. The round of 70 was also the lowest of any MIAA golfer on Thursday, with Kade Hoeksema of Hope breaking even at 72.

Brian Peccie of Washington & Lee leads the pack after three days. As a team, Methodist has the lead heading into the final day of play.

VanScoyk closes the season on Friday on the fourth and final round at the NCAA Division III Championships.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

NAPERVILLE, Il. - Calvin junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) booked her ticket to the upcoming NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships by winning the 1500 meters with a career-best time of 4:30.89 Thursday night at the Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central College. The time ranks ninth on the NCAA III Outdoor list this spring and will guarantee Diekema a second straight trip to the outdoor national meet.
In the long jump, sophomore Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) placed second with a leap of 18-2.25.
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, freshman Angeline Needs (Peru, Il./Saint Bede Academy) clocked a career-best time of 11:32.83. Sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) was 15th in 11:43.89.

On Wednesday night, sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) capped off a stellar spring track campaign by winning the 10,000 meters with a career-best time of 37:06.58.
Junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was seventh with a career-best time of 39:23.00. Senior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) was eighth in a time of 39:23.02.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

NAPERVILLE, Il. - Calvin sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) had a happy homecoming Thursday night at the Gregory Invitational on the campus of North Central College. Ferguson took second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a career-best time of 9:08.13. The time places him 11th on the NCAA III list this spring and will all but assure Ferguson a trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the second straight year.
Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was 11th in the race (9:25.22), senior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional HS) 18th (9:38.28) and sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul International School) 19th (9:40.95).

In the 1500 meter run, senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took eighth with a season-best time of 3:57.68. Freshman Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) took 11th in 3:59.31, eclipsing the four-minute mark for the first time in his career. Freshman Micah Meindertsma (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) was 25th in 4:15.92.
Calvin senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) was third in the 400 meters with a time of 48.25. The quartet of senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), junior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) took seventh with a time of 3:19.15

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Calvin College junior Kelly Pepper has been named to the Division III Great Lakes All-Region second team by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Association.
A native of Wyckoff, New Jersey, Pepper is receiving all-region honors for the first time in her collegiate career. A graduate of Indian Hills High School, Pepper recently concluded a standout junior campaign that saw her rack up a Calvin single-season record 94 points on the strength of 41 goals and 53 assists.

Her season total of 53 assists was also a new Calvin single-season record.

During the season she became Calvin's career record holder in assists and has a total of 88 career assists heading in her season campaign.
She is also ranked third on the Calvin career list in goals (124) and points (212).

Earlier this month, Pepper was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Player as helped lead Calvin to its third MIAA regular season title in the last four years and its third consecutive MIAA Tournament title.
In the MIAA Tournament, Pepper produced four goals and five assists including a four-assist game against St. Mary's in the MIAA Tournament Championship final with the Knights winning by a 16-8 score.
"I am extremely pleased to see Kelly receive this honor," said Calvin women's lacrosse coach Blake Boehm. "This award reflects very highly on her play and on our program."

Calvin concluded its season last Saturday with a second round NCAA III Tournament defeat at Denison University. It marked Calvin's third straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

For the third straight year, Calvin College senior Sarah Bradley has been named to the Division III Google Cloud Academic All-District VI team in the women's at-large division.

The women's at-large division includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, and water polo.

A native of Wheaton, Illinois, Bradley is now eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America consideration. A graduate of Wheaton North High School, Bradley recently completed a standout season on the Calvin women's swimming and diving team.

A four-time national diving qualifier, Bradley was an honorable mention NCAA III All-American this past March, placing ninth on three-meter board at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. It marked the third NCAA III Honorable Mention All-America berth of her collegiate career. This past March, Bradley was the 2018 Central Region diving champion on the one and three-meter boards. She also claimed the 2018 MIAA title on the one-meter board to earn a spot on the All-MIAA team for the third straight year. In 2017, she was the MIAA champion on the one and three-meter boards and was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Diver. At the 2017 NCAA III Central Diving Regional, she captured a regional title on the one-meter board with a score of 432.35.

At Calvin, Bradley has majored in Spanish and engineering. Her engineering concentrations are in civil and environmental engineering. She carries a 3.91 grade point average. She is set to graduate from Calvin this Saturday.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin College senior Michael Moentmann has been named to the Division III Google Cloud Academic All-District VI team in the men's at-large division.

The men's at-large division includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, wrestling and water polo.
A native of Solon, Ohio, Moentmann wrapped up a standout collegiate diving career this past March. A graduate of Solon High School, Moentmann was a three-time national qualifier.
At the NCAA III Championships in March, he garnered NCAA III Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 15th place finish on the one-meter board.

One month earlier on the final night of competition at the MIAA Championships, Moentmann captured the league title one the three-meter board with a score of 513.85 points that helped Calvin move on to win the MIAA team title by 6.5 points. Moentmann also finished second on the one-meter board at the conference meet and was subsequently named to the All-MIAA team for the first time in his career.

In the classroom Moentmann is a double major in biochemistry and public health while carrying a 3.93 grade point average.

He is set to graduate from Calvin this Saturday and plans to attend medical school next fall at Wayne State University.
