GREENSBORO, N.C. - After the first day of the NCAA Championships, senior Ben VanScoyk hit an even round of 72 strokes to stand tied for 20th place.
"Ben played an entertaining, up and down round," said head coach Dr. Brian Bolt. "Showing his ability to control his emotions and bounce back when needed. His seven birdies all came in different ways, sometimes by sinking a long putt, other times overpowering a par five or sticking a wedge inside three feet. Some misses led to big numbers, but he was still able to shoot even par with a double and triple bogey. He is in very good position going into tomorrow's round, so we are very happy with today's result."
A senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, VanScoyk is the second Calvin golfer to compete individually at the NCAA Division III Championships.
VanScoyk started the day with two birdies in his first four holes.
After a bogey on No. 14 and a double-bogey on No. 16, the Calvin senior responded with back-to-back birdies to end the back nine on a high note.
He then landed his third-straight birdie on hole No. 1 to keep the momentum rolling.
Hole No. 3 presented some issues for the Grand Rapids native, but VanScoyk rebounded with birdies on No. 4 and No. 6 to head into the clubhouse even on the day.
At the time the story was written, VanScoyk led the field of 217 players with seven birdies on the day.
Ben VanScoyk will return to the course on Wednesday afternoon for round two and is looking to continue to compete on Thursday and Friday.
