Men's Track and Field Repeats at MIAA Indoor Champions / Women's Track and Field Fourth at MIAA Championships / Men's Lacrossed Nosed Out by North Central / Women's Tennis Falls at Wheaton
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's indoor track and field team claimed its second consecutive MIAA indoor title, taking first place at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a team score of 173.5 points.
Calvin finished 28.5 points ahead of host Trine to win the league crown. The Knights won six events on Saturday but it was the performance of Calvin's shot put throwers that got the momentum rolling early in the morning.
Sophomore Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) took second in the shot put with a career-best indoor throw of 46-9. Junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also added valuable points with a fourth place throw of 46-1.
Later in the meet, VanHouten won the weight throw with a heave of 54-3. Freshman Bryce Reynolds (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) also had a big performance, placing fifth with a throw of 46-7 while Wolfe was seventh with a toss of 45-3.
Senior Ethan Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) won the men's indoor 400 meter crown for the third straight year, clocking in with a time of 49.10. He also placed third in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.74.
Valentine anchored Calvin's 4x400 meter relay to a win in a time of 3:22.72. Junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) led off the relay followed by junior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Valentine.
Calvin rolled up big points in the mile run as the Knights took four of the top six spots. Senior Mark DeJong repeated as league champion, winning the race in a time of 4:23.11. Sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was second (4:23.12), sophomore Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) fourth (4:26.57) and freshman Micah Meindertsma (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) sixth (4:33.56).
Johnson was also second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:00.10 while Ferguson was eighth (9:21.60).
Calvin also piled up points in the 800 meters with Buteyn taking second (2:00.53), senior Hendrik Vermeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) taking third (2:00.70) and Jeninga taking fourth (2:01.09).
In the 5,000 meters, Calvin took three of the top four spots led by senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) who won the race in a time of 15:12.27. Sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) was third (15:35.15) and freshman Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) fourth (15:37.14).
In the 60 meter hurdles, senior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) was fifth (8.77) while sophomore David Byl (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was sixth (8.80).
Calvin's distance medley relay team of Vermeulen, sophomore Jacob Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS), VanDyk and freshman Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was third in a time of 10:49.16.
Sophomore Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) repeated as league champion in the pole vault, winning with a height of 14-4. Senior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was sixth (13-8) and senior Devin Schweigert (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) was eighth (13-0).
In the long jump, sophmore Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Il./Lincoln-Way East HS) was third (21-9) and junior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) fifth (21-7). Van Wyhe added a seventh place finish in the high jump (6-1) while Barents was fourth in the triple jump (42-7).
"I am extremely proud of our guys," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "We finished ahead of some very talented teams today and I think that is what makes this championship very special. The other special part of this championship is that it was a true team effort. We had contributions all over our lineup. I thought we showed up ready to compete and our throwers once again really got us moving in the right direction. It was very much like the script we used to win the (indoor) title last year and the rest of our team continued to ride that momentum."
Saturday's MIAA Championships were held at Trine University. It marked the third MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships competition as the sport was introduced into the MIAA in 2016.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin women's indoor track and field team took fourth at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a team score of 115 points.
After winning the last two MIAA indoor titles, Calvin made a bid for a three-peat but finished just 16.5 points out of first place.
Hope won the meet with 131.5 points with Trine right behind in second with 130 points while Albion was third with 128.5 points.
Hit by injuries and illness heading into the meet, Calvin competed bravely and led for the first half of the meet before falling back just out of contention late in the meet.
The Knights won four individual events led by double-winners Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) and Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS).
A junior, Diekema came up with an impressive double, winning the mile run (5:05.03) and 3,000 meters (10:19.16). A junior, Van Lenten also had an impressive double, winning the 60 meter hurdles with a career-best time of 9.37 and also winning the triple jump with a season-best leap of 35-6. Van Lenten also took third in the long jump with a leap of 17-6.
Senior Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Skyline HS) was fifth in the long jump (16-7).
Calvin's distance medley relay team of senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis HS), senior Maggie LaLonde (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS), sophomore Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) and sophomore Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) was second (13:03.57).
In the 5,000 meter run, sophomore Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (18:02.57), junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was seventh (18:53.87). Koetje added a fifth place finish in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:44.02.
Ball also placed fifth in the mile run with a time of 5:26.53. Greydanus was sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:26.57.
Calvin had three individuals score in the high jump with senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) and sister Erin Van Lenten tying for second with jumps of 4-9. Sophomore Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) also jumped 4-9 but took fourth having accumulated more attempts to clear the bar to finish fourth.
The Van Lenten sisters continued to pile up points in the pole vault. Kayla Van Lenten was third in the event with a vault of 9-7. Freshman sister Brooke Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) also went 9-7 but took fourth, having accumulated more attempts to clear the bar. Junior Annalane Miller (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was sixth in the pole vault with a vault of 9-4.
Sophomore Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) was seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 33-9.
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of junior Alyssa Wolters (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS), sophomore Margaret VanWylen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), Greydanus and LaLonde was fifth with a time of 4:21.15.
"We were a little short-handed today because of some injuries and some illness," said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "Having said that, I was very proud of the way our team competed. We had some outstanding performances and came out with our heads high. We knew that it would be a four-team race for the top spot. We just came up a little short. We will refocus and look forward to the outdoor season."

MEN'S LACROSSE

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team fell 8-4 in its home opener at Grand Rapids Christian high school on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 2-0.
North Central scored the first three goals to build an early lead. With just under a minute remaining in the first quarter, freshman Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill./Grayslake Central) fed senior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Calif./Palm Desert) to put the Knights on the board.
Midway through the second quarter, the Cardinals scored again to regain their three-goal advantage before Boelens assisted junior Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian) two minutes later to make the score 4-2.
North Central responded with another goal, but Calvin sophomore Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi) capitalized on a man-advantage opportunity to make the score 5-3. Boelens earned his third assist on the scoring play. The Cardinals scored a minute later to head into the halftime break with a 6-3 advantage.
At the half, North Central held a 23-7 shots advantage.
Calvin reduced the deficit to two goals out of the break as Winkler fed Bontreger for the Knights' fourth goal. However, the Knights were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, while the Cardinals scored two more goals to earn a four-goal victory.
North Central outshot Calvin 50-16, while scooping up 37 ground balls compared to the Knights' 25. The Knights completed 13-22 clearing attempts, while the Cardinals completed 9-10.
Calvin goalkeeper freshman Michael Wong (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) recorded 21 saves and a team-high seven ground balls in the loss.
Bontreger led the Knights' offense with two goals on three shots. Winkler posted a team-high six shots for one goal, while also scooping up three ground balls.
Saturday's contest marked the first of a two-game home stand for the Knights as Calvin will host DePauw next Saturday. The Knights will be back in action at Grand Rapids Christian High at 1 p.m.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Wheaton 8, Calvin 1
HANOVER PARK, Ill. - The Calvin women's tennis team picked up its first loss of the season against a strong Wheaton team on the road. The Thunder rolled to an 8-1 victory over the Knights.
"Today was a tough match, but a great learning experience," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Wheaton is a very good team and we had to battle in all nine matches. I hope we are able to use today to get better and improve for our trip to Ohio."
Calvin moves to 3-1 on the year and Wheaton improves to 9-1 on the season.
The lone victory of the night came at No. 1 singles. Freshman Leah Newhof toppled Katie Park, 6-3, 6-3.
Newhof is 4-0 in singles dual play on the season.
Sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) battled and forced a third set on court six, but fell to Emme Lindquist, 6-2, 3-6, 5-10.
The Thunder took all three doubles matches, 8-5.
The Knights look to bounce back against Wooster and Marietta on Saturday in Ohio.
