WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Senior setter Jenna Lodewyk was named to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team for NCAA Division III volleyball on Wednesday, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She also claimed the honor of the Academic All-America of the Year.
"I am extremely humbled and honored to receive this award," said Jenna Lodewyk. So much of the credit goes to my teammates, coaches and professors. This is a huge testament to how supportive the Calvin professors are to athletics. Without their understanding, it would be impossible to balance academics and athletics well. I also really appreciate how our coaches embrace that we are students first. Having the opportunity to be a student-athlete has been an incredible experience and I wouldn't be the player or student I am without all of the support."
A business major with a 3.88 cumulative GPA, a first team selection this year to the Division III Academic All-America Team, Lodewyk is now a three-time honoree. She was a member of the second team in 2016 and a third team selection in 2015.
Calvin College has had five of the last seven CoSIDA Academic All-America(r) selections, with Rebecca Kamp winning in 2011, Lizzie Kamp in 2012 and Maggie Kamp in 2014 and 2015.
"Jenna has been given a lot of gifts from God," said Calvin volleyball head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "She has worked very hard to develop those gifts and one of them has been doing well in the classroom. I'm proud of her and what she has accomplished on and off the court and this award is well deserved."
A native of Villa Park, Illinois, Lodewyk is a four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III All-America selection. She was a second team AVCA All-America selection this year and earned second team honors in 2015 and 2016. She was a third team All-America pick in 2014. Lodewyk was the second four-time All-American in Calvin volleyball history.
"Jenna exemplifies the scholar-athlete ideal that we strive for at Calvin College," said Director of Athletics at Calvin College Dr. James Timmer. "We are all proud of what she has accomplished these past four years. She has done amazing things in the classroom, on the court and in the community. We are blessed to have so many amazing student-athletes like Jenna, at Calvin College."
Lodewyk averaged 9.54 assists per set and 2.16 digs per set for the Knights this season. A four-time Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) All-Conference selection, she had a .365 hitting percentage this year. A two-time team captain, Lodewyk ranks third all-time in Calvin volleyball history with 4,558 assists.
She was a part of a senior class that finished with 124 victories, including a 63-1 record in MIAA matches, four MIAA regular season titles, four trips to the NCAA Tournament and a national title in 2016.
