WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin College freshman Joselyn Smith has been named the MIAA Women's Diver of the Week.
A native of Zeeland and a graduate of Zeeland West High School, Smith had a standout set of performances this past weekend in dual meets against Wayne State and Olivet.
In Saturday's 206-69 dual meet victory over Olivet, Smith won the one-meter diving competition with a collegiate career-best score of 237.52.
She also placed second on the three-meter board with a score of 219.45.
In Friday's 146-97 loss to Division II Wayne State, she was fourth on the one-meter board (201.95) and sixth on the three-meter board (201.70).
"Joselyn had a great weekend of competition," said Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan. "She is a talented diver with a lot of potential. She is working hard and her hard work is starting to gain strong results. I am excited to see her recognized by the MIAA and I am excited to see her continue to improve."
Smith is part of a Calvin women's swimming and diving team that is currently ranked 17th in Division III by the College Swim Coaches Association of America.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Ali Spayde its Player of the Week in women's basketball for games played through Nov. 19.
"This is a well deserved honor," said Calvin head coach Chuck Winkelman. "Ali performed at an All-American level this past week."
A senior from Lewis Center, Ohio, Spayde averaged 27.3 points per game and 4.3 rebounds per game last week.
She leads the MIAA in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game and in field goals at 139.
Last Wednesday, Spayde scored a career-high 34 points at Cornerstone. She also finished the game with five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Against No. 5 Thomas More, she recorded 27 points and four rebounds.
Spayde recorded her 1000th career point on Saturday against Capital. She finished the game with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
For her performance, she was named to the University of Rochester Chuck Resler Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Spayde and the Knights return to action on Friday against St. Olaf at the College Town Classic in Northfield, Minnesota.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin College men's basketball alum Steve Honderd recently was named the winner of a Detroit Free Press fan bracket challenge matching up collegiate men's basketball players from the state of Michigan up against several notable Division I alumni. The list did not include Michigan State alum Earvin "Magic" Johnson.
