Basketball Teams Fall to Nationally-Ranked Foes;
Swimming and Diving Drop Dual Meets To Wayne State
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Augustana 80, Calvin 69
ROCK ISLAND, Il. - The Calvin men's basketball team dropped its season opener, falling 80-69 at No. 2 Augusta College Friday evening.
Calvin (0-1) fell behind 21-4 to open the game against an Augustana team that reached the NCAA III Semifinals last March.
The Knights rallied to close to within eight however late in the first half, trailing just 39-31 after a three-point play by junior Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (Wyoming, Mich./Wyoming HS).
Augustana built its lead back up by double-digits early in the second half. Calvin trimmed the lead back to single digits after a dunk by junior Austin Bykerk (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) made the score 73-64 with 4:14 remaining.
Calvin got no closer however as the host Vikings (2-0) claimed the win.
Freshman Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge HS) had a big game in his collegiate debut with a team-high 18 points for th eKnights. Morrison was 7-of-10 from the field including 3-of-5 from three-point range.
Amoros-Gutierrez had 12 points off the benc while bykerk had nine points and seven rebounds.
Calvin shot 47.3 percent from the field but turned the ball over 17 times.
Calvin travels to Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday for a 5 p.m. game.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Thomas More 70, Calvin 52
ROCHESTER, NY - Calvin fell to No. 5 Thomas More 70-52 in the first round of the University of Rochester Chuck Resler Invitational Friday afternoon.
Calvin (0-2) battled the Saints on even terms for one half of play, trailing just 29-27 at halftime. The Knights slipped behind Thomas More 48-40 at the end of the third quarter.
Thomas More then outscored Calvin 22-12 in the final quarter of play.
Senior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Oh./Worthington Christian HS) had another big game for the Knights, scoring 27 points while grabbing four rebounds.
Junior Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) just missed a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Thomas More (1-0) was led by Madison Temple with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Calvin shot 32.8 percent from the field and was outrebounded by Thomas More 54-25.
Calvin will face Capital University in the consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team hosted the NCAA Division II Warriors of Wayne State on Friday evening. The Warriors walked away with a 137-104 victory.
The Knights recorded nine second-place finishes on Friday.
The lone two Calvin victories came from freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela / Colegio Emil Friedman). He won the 200-yard freestyle at 1:44.85 and the 500-yard freestyle at 4:48.14.
The Knight jump back in the pool on Saturday, when they host Olivet.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team welcomed Wayne State to the Venema Aquatic Center on Friday. The NCAA Division II Warriors topped the Knights, 146-97. Calvin recorded five victories on the evening.
Junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School) recorded the first Calvin victory in the 1650-yard freestyle at 18:15.45.
Senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) swept the diving competition with a winning score of 266 points on the 1-meter and 259.05 on the 3-meter.
Freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington) touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:00.07.
Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) flexed her muscles in the 500-yard freestyle and won with a time of 5:22.23.
The Knight jump back in the pool on Saturday, when they host Olivet.
