CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 5, 2017 (Part Two)
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving finished the two-day Calvin Quad on Saturday. The Knights finished in first place with 1155 points. Calvin won six events on Saturday.
"The three biggest takeaways were that we were able to go through all the emotional ups and downs over 24-26 hours which was good to feel," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "We accumulated a lot of data that will affect our training going forward, and most importantly, we spent 25 hours together on deck, getting to know each other even more. It was a win on all fronts."
The Knights opened the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) finished at 1:51.95.
Freshman Kelly Makela (Boise, Idaho/Boise) finished fourth in the 400-yard I.M. at 5:00.38. In the 100-yard butterfly, Jenna Oezer finished in third place at 1:00.12.
The first Calvin victory of the day came in the 200-yard freestyle. The Knights went 1-2-3, with senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) leading the way at 1:56.71, junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) in second place at 1:57.12 and junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Calif./Home School) in third place at 1:59.31.
Junior Elysa Wolf (Austin, Texas/Regents School of Austin) was the fastest Knight in the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:14.49.
Hannah Chao placed second in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:00.86.
The Knights flexed their muscles in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a first-place finish. The Team of junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), Kendall Murphy, Abby Van Harn and Anna Serino won at 7:58.98.
Kendall Murphy kept the winning waves going in the 1650-yard freestyle, with a winning time of 18:36.75.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Calvin had two of the three-fastest times with Anna Serino in second place at 2:12.82 and Hannah Chao in third place at 2:12.92.
Abby Van Harn was victorious again on Saturday evening in the 100-yard freestyle at 52.80.
In the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Audrey McFarland (Seattle. Wash./Ballard) was the fastest Knight at 2:27.35.
The Knights posted a one-two punch on the 1-meter boards on Saturday. Senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) won at 418.65 and freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West) finished in second place at 360.45.
The Maroon and Gold closed the competition with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Emily Gunderson, Anna Serino, Madelyn Smith, and Abby Van Harn won at 3:36.58.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, when they host Wheaton.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team finished the two-day Calvin Quad on Saturday. The Knights finished in second place at 995.5 points, No. 22 Carthage won with 1019 points. The Knights won three events on Saturday.

Freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman) placed third in the 400-yard I.M. at 4:16.80. Jared Briton finished the 100-yard butterfly in third place at 52.58.
In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Tim Randall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished in third place at 1:49.48.
Jacob Lensing touched the wall at 1:01.01 in the 100-yard breaststroke to finish in fifth place.
Ben Holstege recorded a time of 51.86 in the 100-yard backstroke in second place.
The Knights finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of sophomore Fear Churchwell Athens, Ga./Clarke Central), Julian Iturbe, Nathan Olberding, and Tim Randall finished at 7:13.99
The first Calvin victory of the day for the Calvin men came in the 1650-yard freestyle with Julian Iturbe at 16:34.16.
Junior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia) led the Knights in the 200-yard backstroke in fourth place at 1:59.93.
The Maroon and Gold posted a 1-2-3- finish in the 100-yard freestyle on Saturday. Ben Holstege led the pack at 47.19, Jared Britton finished in second place at 47.52 and senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) checked in at 48.15 in third place.
Senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi) led the Knights in the 200-yard butterfly in third place at 2:01.00.
Freshman Alex Bergsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) was seventh on the 3-meter board at 312.15.
Calvin closed the quad with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ben Holstege, Max DeYoung, Julian Iturbe and Jared Britton won at 3:08.80.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, when they host Wheaton.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Trinity Christian 71, Calvin 63
PALOS HEIGHTS, Il. - The Calvin men's basketball team dropped a 71-63 decision at Trinity Christian College Saturday afternoon. Because the game took place prior to the November 15 Division III opening day, the game goes in the books as an exhibition game for the Knights while it will serve as an official game for the NAIA Trolls.
Trinity Christian (2-0) led 35-22 at halftime, using a 13-2 run over the final six minutes of the first half to build a double-digit lead.
Calvin whittled the Trinity lead down to one point at 50-49 on a layup by junior Jason Wolter (Coloma, Mich./Lake Michigan Community College) with 8:39 left to play.
Wolter then converted a layup with 4:46 remaining to tie the game 58-58.
Calvin trailed by a point at 64-63 after Luke Morrison (Bristol, Ind./Northridge HS) converted a pair of free throws with 1:01 remaining but Trinity Christian scored the final seven points of the game including five at the free throw line to seal the win.
Senior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) led Calvin with 23 points while sophomore Derrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) notched a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Walter and Luke Morrison added seven points apiece off the bench.
Calvin returns to action on November 13 when it hosts Grace Bible College in an exhibition game that will be played in Calvin's Hoogenboom Gymnasium due to Van Noord Arena being used for the NCAA III Volleyball Championships that week.
