Men's Golf Holds Fifth Place Through Day One of O'Briant-Jensen Invite;
Men's and Women's Swimmers and Divers Receive MIAA Weekly Honors
MEN'S GOLF
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The No. 8 ranked Calvin men's golf team opened competition at the O'Briant-Jensen Invite on Monday at the Sedgefield Country Club. The Knights shot a combined round of 300 strokes. In a field filled with top-25 teams, the Knights are in fifth place.
"We battled the wind and rain all day and no one gave up," said head coach Dr. Brian Bolt. "Our day one score is not what we want it to be, but fortunately we are not out of it. We will have to make some adjustments tomorrow to the greens and the way the course plays. Each time we get a chance to play on Bermuda greens, our short games will improve. We are looking to post a competitive score tomorrow."
Junior Alec DeJonge (Niles, Mich./Brandywine) led the Knights with a round of 74 strokes on Monday. After shooting a four-over-par round in the front nine, DeJong had a birdie at No. 10 to finish the back nine at one-under-par. He currently sits tied for 16th place.
The senior duo of Ben VanScoyk and John Van Noord finished tied for 26th place at 75 strokes.
John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian) finished the day with birdies on two of the three final holes.
Senior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) walked into the club house with a round of 75. He recorded three birdies on the day.
Freshman Sam Holland (Novi, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) recorded a round of 76 strokes. He landed four birdies in the final eight holes, including the final two holes. Holland is tied for 36th place.
Junior Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) shot a round of 82 to finish tied for 84th place. Kuiper notched a birdie at the par-five No. 10 hole.
The Knights return to action On Tuesday for the final round of the two-day tournament.
No. 6 Methodist University leads at 290 strokes. Rounding up the top five is No. 2 Huntington at 292, No. 17 Guilford at 296 and No. 26 Carnegie Mellon at 298.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
For the third time in her collegiate career, Calvin College junior Anna Serino has been named the MIAA Women's Swimmer of the Week.
A native of Pinckney and a graduate of Pinckney High School, Serino had a superb set of performances Friday night in a double-dual meet with Hillsdale and Grand Valley State at the Venema Aquatic Center.
In the 200 freestyle, Serino cruised to a first place time of 1:56.12 that currently ranks seventh nationally. She also placed fifth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:17.86 that ranks 13th nationally.
In addition she was part of Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team that placed second with a time of 1:40.20 that ranks ninth nationally.
Serino's efforts helped Calvin defeat Hillsdale 148-86 while the Knights were topped by Grand Valley State 159-82.
"Anna had a terrific opening night," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "She was not far off her career-best in the 200 freestyle in her first meet of the year which shows where she is in her training. She is poised for a big season and we are exciting to move forward as a team in the upcoming weeks."
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts the MIAA Relays at the Venema Aquatic Center beginning at 6 p.m.
WOMEN'S DIVING
For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin senior Sarah Bradley has been named the MIAA Women's Diver of the Week.
A native of Wheaton, Illinois, Bradley took third on the one-meter board with a score of 194.10 Friday night in a double-dual meet with Hillsdale and Grand Valley State. She also placed second on the three-meter board with a score of 232.85.
Bradley's efforts helped Calvin defeat Hillsdale 148-86 while the Knights were topped by Grand Valley State 159-82.
"It is always good to see our divers recognized and it was good to get our season underway Friday night," said Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan. "Sarah is one of the leaders in a very youthful group of divers on our team this year. Our goal as a group is to continue to progress as a diving team and improve each and every day. That includes encouraging one another and I am confident those dynamics will take place as we move forward through our schedule."
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts the MIAA Relays at the Venema Aquatic Center beginning at 6 p.m.
MEN'S SWIMMING
For the second time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior Ben Holstege has been named the MIAA Men's Swimmer of the Week.
A native of Keswick, Virginia, Holstege had a standout evening in a dual meet with Grand Valley State Friday night at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Holstege was second Friday night in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.37 that currently ranks second nationally.
He also swam on Calvin's 200 medley relay team that placed second with a time of 1:35.79. That relay time ranks 13th nationally.
"Ben came out of the gates Friday night and swam really fast," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "It was great to see him get off to such a quick start. He is primed for a big season and I am happy to see him receive this award."

MEN'S DIVING
For the second time in his career, Calvin College senior Michael Moetmann has been named the MIAA Men's Diver of the Week.
A native of Solon, Ohio, Moentmann took third on the three-meter board with a score of 232.05 in a dual meet with Grand Valley State Friday night. A graduate of Solon High School, Moentmann then placed second on the one-meter board with a score of 237.15.
