GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team picked up a key mid-season conference victory on Tuesday evening, defeating Adrian College, 1-0.
With the win, the Knights improve to 9-2-0 on year with a 6-1-0 MIAA mark, as they move into a tie for first place with Hope College (8-1-0, 6-1-0 MIAA). The Bulldogs fall to 6-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play.
"We got a goal early and that really helped," said head coach Mark Recker. "We played a really good team that really wanted to score a goal and win. Psychologically we did not take them out of the game tonight. We did close the game out and kept them scoreless. Amy came up big a number of times.
The Knights' lone goal came in the 16th minute of the evenly-matched first half. Junior Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian) put the ball on the foot of Calvin leading goal-scorer Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian), who capitalized on the chance in the box.
Calvin held a 5-3 shots advantage at the halftime break.
The Knights' offense stepped up its pressure in the second half, notching four shots by the 60th minutes. Koops, Van Vliet and Maria VanderLei all recorded shots in the offensive surge.
With 20 minutes left to play, the Bulldogs' offense tried to knot the score, but could not capitalize on three consecutive shots. In the 77th minute, Calvin goalkeeper Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) came up with a big save on a Bulldog breakaway to preserve the Knights' lead.
The Knights disallowed Adrian of a shot on back-to-back corner kicks in the final ten minutes of play.
Calvin outshot its visitors 13-8 on the evening. Koops finished with six shots, while VanderLei had four. Kliewer recorded three saves in her fifth shutout victory of the season.

VOLLEYBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The American Volleyball Coaches Association named Sarah DeVries the Sports Imports / AVCA Division III Player of the Week.
"We feel very honored with Sarah to receive this award," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "We love her as a teammate, a friend, and what she brings to practice every single day! She is truly an all-around gifted player, including having the ability to be a top setter for our program."
Each week Sports Imports and the AVCA recognize deserving student-athletes at the collegiate level who have demonstrated outstanding play on the court throughout the week of competition. A Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week is named for the different NCAA Divisions during both the men's and women's season.
This is the eighth time in program history that Calvin has had a Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week winner, with the most recent coming from Maggie Kamp on October 15, 2013.
A sophomore from Grand Rapids, Michigan, DeVries is receiving this honor for the first time in her career. On Monday, she was named the MIAA Player of the Week.
"This is really exciting for me," said DeVries. "This is an incredible honor. But I cannot take all the credit for myself, I owe a lot of it to my amazing teammates and coaches who have done so much to help me achieve this honor."
Last week against Kalamazoo, she led the Knights with 13 kills and hit .550 against the Hornets. DeVries also notched four blocks and two service aces.
DeVries had a record-breaking match against the No. 20 Flying Dutch. She finished with a match-high 16 kills, which tied her career high. She also tallied eight blocks and 12 digs, which are both career-highs.
DeVries leads the team with 45 blocks on the year and is averaging 2.93 kills-per-set, while recording a .307 hitting percentage.
