Volleyball Team Gains Top Spot in AVCA Division III Preseason Top 25 Poll

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin volleyball team will open the 2017 season as the number-one ranked team in NCAA Division III women's volleyball. The Knights claimed the number-one spot in the preseason Division III Top-25 poll released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association earlier Tuesday.
Calvin received 62 of a possible 63 first-place votes to tally 1,573 points. Emory University (Ga.) is ranked second in the poll with 1,395 points while Washington - St. Louis is ranked third with 1,358 points.
Calvin will face seven teams during the 2017 season that are ranked in the AVCA preseason Division III Top 25 poll. During the year, Calvin will face 15th-ranked Hope twice. The Knights will face 23rd-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh, No. 14 Trinity and sixth-ranked Cal Lutheran in Texas. At The Elmhurst Tournament, Calvin will face No. 9 Colorado College. At the Calvin Midwest Invitational, the Knights will host No. 17 Millikin and No. 21 Elmhurst.
A year ago, Calvin finished 33-1 and won its third national title in seven seasons. Under the direction of head coach Amber Warners, Calvin has captured national titles in 2010 and 2013 while also reaching the national final in 2012.
The Knights return two players that received 2016 AVCA Division III All-America honors. Returning is senior setter Jenna Lodewyk, a Second Team All-American last year along with junior outside hitter Anna Kamp, a First Team All-American in 2016.
Calvin will open its season on Sept. 1 when it travels to Texas for the two-day Trinity National Invitational.
