Valentine Shatters Calvin Record in 400 Meters in NCAA Prelims;
Dyksen Takes 11th in 100 Meter Hurdles at NCAA III Championships;
Strohbehn and Kramer Receive CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GENEVA, Ohio - Ethan Valentine broke the school record in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
"Ethan ran very well today," said Calvin head coach Bret Otte. "Rick Otte and I thought based on practices, that Ethan would run that fast soon. But, it is always satisfying to see that happen in a race."
A junior from Mason, Ohio, Valentine cruised in the third heat on Friday. He recorded the fastest time of the day at 46.80 to advance to the finals on Saturday.
Valentine broke the school record that stood at 47.24. He also broke the stadium record of 47.34.
The competition ends on Saturday at the championships. Calvin is currently tied for 33rd place with two points. George Fox leads with 23 points.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GENEVA, Ohio - Jenna Dyksen competed at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday.
"Jenna did very well today," said Calvin head coach Bret Otte. "She ran her third-fastest time of her life. Today was a good way to end a great season for her.:
A junior from Hawthorne, New Jersey, Dyksen finished in 12th place in the 100-meter hurdles. Dyksen crossed the finish line at 14.61.
The three-day competition ends on Saturday. Ithaca leads after day two with 30 points.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY
For the third consecutive year, Calvin College junior Lauren Strohbehn has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in the women's track/cross country division.
As a member of the all-district team, Strohbehn is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.
Strohbehn hails from Stillwater, Minnesota. She is a graduate of St. Croix Preparatory High School. Strohbehn has put together a standout career of distance running on both the Calvin cross country and track and field teams.
During the cross country season this fall, she was named to the All-MIAA first team and to the Great Lakes All-Region team. She placed 80th at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships, helping the Knights place ninth in the final team standings.
In 2015, Strohbehn was the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner for cross country and the Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year after taking first at the MIAA Championships and at the Great Lakes Regionals. She also took first place at the Calvin Knight Invite in mid-September and was subsequently named the Division III National Runner of the Week by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. At the NCAA III Championships, she just missed NCAA III All-America honors, placing 40th individually.
She has also had a decorated track and field career, earning NCAA III All-America honors last year in the 10,000 meters with a third place finish in the national meet. Strohbehn qualified again for the national meet in the 10K this spring. Yesterday morning, she placed 17th in the 10,000.
Earlier this spring, Strohbehn was an All-MIAA track and field honoree for the third straight year after winning the 5,000 meters at the MIAA Championships. She was later named to the USTFCCCA Division III Great Lakes All-Region Outdoor Track and Field Team.
Academically, Strohbehn majored in biology with a minor in kinesiology. She is a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll last year.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY
Calvin College senior Jordan Kramer has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team in the men's track and field/cross country division.
As a member of the all-district team, Kramer is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.
Kramer is from Pewaukee, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of Lake Country Lutheran High School.
Kramer has had a standout set of seasons in cross country and track and field during the 2016-17 academic year. This past fall, Kramer claimed All-America honors with a 19th place finish at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships. He also helped the Knights capture a Great Lakes Regional title, as he took second individually at the Great Lakes Regional meet to earn Great Lakes All-Region honors. He took first at the MIAA Championships and was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner. He was named to the All-MIAA first team.
During the winter and spring, he helped Calvin capture MIAA titles in both indoor and outdoor track and field. During the indoor season, he captured an MIAA indoor title in the 5,000 meters to land a spot on the All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field Team. He later qualified for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships where he placed 12th in the 5,000 meters. In addition, he was named a two-time MIAA Indoor Track and Field Runner of the Week and was named to the USTFCCCA Great Lakes All-Region Indoor Track and Field Team.
At the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships he placed third in the 1500 meters. He was also named to the USTFCCCA Great Lakes All-Region Outdoor Track and Field Team.
Academically, Kramer majored in philosophy at Calvin and was graduated last weekend. He was a two-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team in men's cross country.
