MEN'S GOLF

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - John Van Noord competed in the first day of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships on Tuesday.
Van Noord, a junior from Troy, Michigan, shot eight over par on Tuesday.
After starting the day with a rough first hole, Van Noord rebounded with a strong outing.
Van Noord recorded three birdies on the day.
He currently is tied for 123rd place with 80 strokes.
Addison Lambeth of Huntingdon is the leader after the first day at 69 strokes. Huntingdon leads with 293 strokes overall.
"I was really proud of John today," said Calvin men's golf coach Brian Bolt. "His round started in the worst possible way, taking an unfortunate 10 on his first hole. After that, he knew that he had likely lost any chance of posting a competitive score. Though down, John did not give up. He fought through a long day on the coure and turned in a commendable score given the circumstances. Even in tough times, John is great young man to coach."
Second day action continues on Wednesday morning.
