ADRIAN, Mich. - The MIAA league-leading Adrian Bulldogs took both ends of a doubleheader from Calvin, defeating the Knights 7-0 in game one and 8-3 in game two.
In game one, Adrian (15-6 overall, 9-1 MIAA) scored two runs in the first, one in the third and four runs in the fifth to put the game away.
Calvin (8-12 overall, 4-6 MIAA) had four hits including two off the bat of junior Johnny Salgado (Whittier, Ca./Whittier HS). Sophomore Johnathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) also had a double for the Knights.
Freshman Mike Kool (Centerville, Mich./Sturgis HS) got the start and took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the year. Freshman Micah Berlage (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and sophomore Jimmy Dirksen (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) also saw time in relief.
In game two, Adrian scored five runs in the third and three in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead. Keane drove in Calvin's first run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, bringing home senior Colton Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids HS) who led off the inning with a single.
The Knights added two more in the top of the ninth as Salgago belted a double into the right-centerfield gap to plate senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) and Keane. Kempton reached base on a two-out single while Keane followed with a walk.
Calvin did not score again however as Adrian's Zach Dunn sealed the win.
Sophomore Clay Francisco (Delton, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) took the loss to dip to 1-2 on the year. Dirksen, freshman Josh Sterenberg (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and junior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) all saw time in relief.
The two teams will complete the four-game series on Saturday with Calvin hosting Adrian in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
As part of the NCAA D3 Week festivities, the national championship Calvin women's volleyball team will throw out the first pitch for game one.
