CALVIN KNIGHT SATURDAY SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 11, 2017

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

The four teams headed to Grand Rapids to compete in the NCAA III Tournament Semifinals and Finals next weekend are set.

The four teams advancing to the finals in Grand Rapids are Amherst (31-0), St. Thomas (31-0), Tufts (29-2) and Christopher Newport (29-2).

The NCAA III Tournament semifinals are set for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on March 17. The NCAA III Tournament final is slated for March 18 at 7:30 p.m.

All three games will take place inside Van Noord Arena on the campus of Calvin College.

St. Thomas will face Tufts in one semifinal game while Amherst will face Christopher Newport in the other semifinal game. The starting times for each semifinal game will be announced by the NCAA on Sunday afternoon.

MEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Ethan Valentine took fourth place in the 400 meter finals on Saturday afternoon at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of North Central College. A junior from Mason, Ohio, Valentine clocked in a time of 48.87.
"Ethan ran very well today," said Calvin head coach Bret Otte. "He ran one of his three fastest indoor times today. He ran fast enough to place fourth in a very challenging field."
Marquis Brown of Texas Lutheran won the event with a winning time of 48.62.
The fourth place finish for Valentine gave Calvin five points which was good for 32nd place in the final team standings. It is also the highest finish for a Calvin student-athlete at the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Championships since 2011.
North Central and Wisconsin-La Crosse tied for first with 34 points.
Valentine and the Knights open the outdoor season on March 24 and the Montevallo Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Alabama.

MEN'S LACROSSE
Wabash 13, Calvin 7

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team dropped a 13-7 decision at Wabash College Saturday afternoon.

Calvin (1-3) battled the Little Giants (3-2) on even terms through three quarters of play but were outscored in the fourth quarter 7-2 as Wabash pulled away for the win.

Wabash scored the first two goals of the game but Calvin came back with goals from senior Chris Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) and sophomore Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) to tie the game 2-2 after one quarter of play.

Wabash scored a pair of goals to take a 4-2 halftime lead but the Knights scored the first two goals of the third quarter with junior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) and senior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) scoring back-to-back goals to tie the game at four.

Tucker Dixon scored two quick goals for Wabash to give the Little Giants a 6-4 lead but a late goal by Griffin with a man advantage brought the Knights within one heading in the final quarter of play. Freshman Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) assisted on the goal by Chris Griffin with just 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The game remained close early in the fourth as the two teams traded goals with Collin Brennan scoring for Wabash and Griffin Sparling scoring on a feed from Chris Griffin for the Knights.

Wabash then scored five straight goals to build a 12-6 advantage. A late goal by sophomore Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got the Knights with five at 12-7 but Wabash was able to close out the game, sealing the contest wtih a score in the closing seconds.

Calvin held a 41-22 shots at goal advantage. Nedd had a team-high seven ground balls. Max Atkins had 15 saves in goal for Wabash. Freshman Mitchell Caldwell (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing HS) had six saves in goal for the Knights.

Calvin will now prepare to host Northland College (Wisc.) next Friday at noon at Grand Rapids Christian High School.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Capital 8, Calvin 3

EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - On Saturday afternoon, the Calvin women's lacrosse team faced off against the Crusaders of Capital University.
The Knights (1-2) took an early 2-1 lead, but Capital came back, scoring seven unanswered goals to claim an 8-3 victory.
Calvin maintained possession in the first few minutes of the contest, earning two shots, but were unable to capitalize on the chances.
7:45 into the contest, Capital's Kathryn Walton scored to give the Crusaders an early advantage.
Less than three minutes later, sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills HS) fired a shot into the back of Capital's goal to even the score at one.
With 7:31 left in the first half, junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) scored her third goal of the season off a free position attempt to give Calvin the advantage.
With just under two minutes remaining before halftime, Capital scored back-to-back goals to take a 3-2 lead heading into the break.
At halftime, the Knights possessed a 12-6 shots advantage, including seven shots on goal.
Early in the second half, the Crusaders pulled away, scoring four consecutive goals to go up 7-2. With 12:19 remaining, Capital's Makenna Ozenghar netted a goal, giving the Crusaders a six-goal lead.
With 6:20 left to play, Davio broke the Knights' scoring dry spell scoring her second goal of the afternoon. However, Davio's goal would be the final of the afternoon and the Crusaders would take the 8-3 road win.
Davio led the Knights' offense with two goals off seven shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis CDS) led the Knights with six ground balls.
Capital outshot Calvin 19-18 in the victory. Chalfant recorded five saves in the loss.
The Knights are back in action next Saturday when they take on Wooster in Englewood, Florida.
