TIFFIN, Oh. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team handed Dave Hoger his first collegiate victory as a head coach Thursday evening as the Knights picked up an 8-6 win at Heidelberg University.

Calvin (1-1) rallied from a 3-1 deficit with five unanswered goals to take control of the game.

The Knights trailed 3-1 at the end of one quarter of play but scored three goals in the second quarter to take a 4-3 halftime lead. Sophomore Max Foster (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) sandwiched a pair of goals in the second quarter surge around a man-up goal by freshman Andrew Gortsema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). Foster's second goal of the quarter came on a feed from senior Chris Griffin (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) and gave the Knights a 4-3 lead with 1:19 left in the first half.

Griffin then scored on a feed from senior Joel Schaefer (Clarksville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian HS) just 1:18 into the third quarter. Junior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Ca./Palm Desert HS) scored his second goal of the game later in the quarter, converting a pass from Schaefer.

The Calvin lead swelled to 7-3 on an unassisted goal by sophomore Austin Bontreger (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) early in the fourth quarter. After Heidelberg (0-2) scored a few minutes later, Winkler scored a key insurance goal with 8:43 remaining with Schaefer once again drawing an assist on the play.

Calvin held the 8-4 lead until the closing minute of the game when Heidelberg scored two goals in the final 31 seconds.

"We had a great week of practice that translated to the game tonight," said Hoger who is in his first year at the helm of the Knights after the game. "We played with poise and did the little things rights. It's always exciting to get the first win of the season and the guys are hungry to keep improving."

Calvin finished the game with a 36-18 shots at goal advantage. Winkler had three goals and Schaefer three assists. Horstman and junior Ethan Brown (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth HS) scooped up eight ground balls apiece. Brown also caused four Heidelberg turnovers. Junior Austin Roden (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also 5-for-7 on face offs.

Nine members of the Calvin College men's track and field team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA Indoor Men's Track and Field Team are seniors Jordan Kramer and Zac Nowicki, juniors Ethan Valentine, Mark DeJong and Noah Buteyn, sophomore Brendan Van Houten, Luke Peterson and James Jeninga and freshman Jonathan Walt.

Valentine headlines the list as he has been named the MIAA's Most Valuble Runner for indoor track and field. This past Saturday at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) repeated as the MIAA Indoor champion in the 400 meters with a meet and track record time of 48.13. The time by Valentine is currently the top 400 meter time in NCAA Division III indoor track and field this winter. He then anchored Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team to a victory in a meet and track record time of 3:22.54. Valentine is receiving All-MIAA honors for indoor track and field for the second straight year.
Valentine was joined on the winning 4x400 meter relay team by junior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomores James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) and Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS).

As members of the winning relay, Buteyn, Jeninga and Peterson also receive All-MIAA honors. Peterson is receiving All-MIAA indoor track and field honors for the second straight year. He was a member of Calvin's winning distance medley relay at the 2016 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Buteyn and Jeninga are receiving All-MIAA indoor track and field honors for the first time. Jeninga also took second in the 800 meters (1:56.34) while Peterson was fifth in the 800 meters (1:57.55). Buteyn meanwhile took fourth place individually in the 400 meters (51.12).

Kramer, Nowicki and DeJong were all part of a power-packed distance lineup for Calvin this past Saturday.

Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) captured the 5,000 meters in a meet and track record time of 14:37.08 that currently ranks 11th on the national list. DeJong captured the league title in the mile, winning with a time of 4:25.38 and then placed third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:57.49. DeJong was part of a 1-2-3-4 Calvin finish in the 3,000 meters that sealed the team title for the Knights as it came in the second-to-the-last event of the meet.

Van Houten and Walt were part of Calvin's field athletes that provided key scoring support on Saturday.

Seeded sixth in the shot put, Van Houten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) rose up to win the event Saturday morning with a career-best throw of 46-3 1/4. Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) sparkled in the pole vault, winning the event with a vault of 14-9. Both are receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time.

This past Saturday, Calvin captured the MIAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Title with 195 points under the leadership of head coach Bret Otte. The title is the first indoor crown in Calvin men's track and field history.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Three members of the Calvin women's track and field team have received All-MIAA honors for indoor track and field.

Junior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) headlines the Calvin honor list as she has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner. Dyksen is joined on the All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field team from Calvin by sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) and freshman Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS).

Last Saturday at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Calvin, Dyksen won three events and piled up 38 points in helping lead the Knights to their second consecutive MIAA indoor crown.
